After successive
ownership changes of the island and the introductions
of various other stallions, some successful and some not, the herd was moved to
Cornwall in 1980. After having greater success with improved breeding techniques
some mares were moved back to the island again to continue the experiment.
The Lundy Pony conforms to true pony
characteristics.
Additionally, its neck is long and quite strong owing to
good muscle development. The head is neat with a broad forehead, fine cheekbones
and a wide strong jaw. The ears are smaller in appearance. The eye is gentle and
alert. The back is short with a body that is strong, deep and well ribbed. The shoulders
sloping and well formed. The most common colour is dun with black points but bay,
dark chestnut are sometimes found and accepted.
The Lundy stands on average 13.2 hands high.
