Because of
today’s lack of cart pulling the Pony is mostly
seen in the show rings since its fast, fluid and extravagant action is a pleasure
to watch. Its amazingly strong legs allow it to also excel in show jumping.
Tradesmen in past years used Hackney Ponies to pull their
carts as their appearance was seen to draw attention to their services.
The Hackney Pony has a small
head, a small muzzle, large eyes and small ears.
The pony’s neck is medium long with powerful shoulders and low withers. The body
is compact with a smaller chest. The legs are short with strong hocks and well shaped
feet. The tail is set and carried high. The Pony’s coat hair is fine and silky.
The action is high, straight and free giving the Hackney
tremendous speed without bouncing a cart or carriage. It is found mostly in bays,
browns and blacks.
The Hackney Pony stands less than 14 hands high.
