They live wild
in the moorlands of Westmorland and Cumberland
where only the hardiest animals survive the sparse precipitous, difficult grazing
and rugged terrain.
A Fell Pony can be a great riding or driving pony and is
kept by many small farms as it is courageous, has great endurance and stamina, and
is hardy and surefooted. Its action is considered to be smart and true having a
fast active walk and swift trot.
The Fell Pony is mostly black and dark
brown although sometimes brown, dun and gray
coats are seen. The pony is strong with powerful muscles suitable to the difficult
range lands it lives on. The hair of the main and tail is very long and curly. The
tail is well set. The legs are set squarely with large knees and with large clean
hocks. The feet are round, open consisting of dense and consistent hard horn. The
shoulders are long, sloping and well laid back. The neck is long and sturdy. The
head is typical of a pony with sharp well placed ears, large eyes and large nostrils.
The Fell Pony has an average height of 13.2 hands. It is
remarkably true to its breed.
