The main focus of the British Riding Ponies breeding programs
is to produce the ultimate elegant riding pony to perform in
show riding classes.
There are three sub-types of Riding Ponies; the show pony,
the show hunter, and the working hunter. Each is bred to provide optimum characteristics
with classes as shows divided by height and
type.
British Riding Ponies are small compact horses with sloping
shoulders and a narrow front. They have large fine well spaced eyes and small ears.
Their necks are long and well formed with the withers high on the neck. Their medium
length back is straight and able to hold a saddle properly. The chest is deep and
the tail is set high. The legs have broad joints, short cannons and hard feet. Riding
Ponies come in all colors.
British Riding Ponies are courageous and willing and have
a gentle nature. Smaller Riding Ponies are ideal for children learning to ride because
of their wonderful even temperament. They are well suited to both the show ring
and a family companion on a farm.
